Bruce Springsteen had already found the heart of “Because the Night”—the music, structure and soaring central chorus—but its verses were still unfinished. It was 1977, and he was deep in the sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town. 🎸

Jimmy Iovine was working with Springsteen while also producing Patti Smith’s album Easter. Hearing the possibilities in the unfinished recording, he brought the cassette to Smith. What arrived was not a complete song waiting to be copied; it was a powerful foundation waiting for another writer. 📼✨

At the time, Smith was living in New York while Fred “Sonic” Smith, her boyfriend and future husband, lived in Detroit. Long-distance calls were expensive, so they arranged specific times to speak. One night, Fred’s call was late. As Patti waited restlessly, she returned to Springsteen’s tape and began shaping verses from that distance, longing and anticipation.

By the time Fred called around midnight, Smith had written the verses and the song’s closing section. The experience even informed the telephone imagery within her new lyrics. ☎️🌙

The collaboration gave the song its final identity: Springsteen’s music and anthemic chorus joined to Smith’s deeply personal verses. The Patti Smith Group recorded “Because the Night” for Easter, and it became her first major commercial hit, carrying her work to a much wider audience.

Springsteen later wrote his own lyrics and performed the song, but he praised what Smith had brought to it. He acknowledged that her contribution allowed the unfinished piece to become the song listeners came to love. 🤝

That is the magic of a true co-write: one artist creates the spark, another finds the missing words, and the night belongs to both of them.
