Marc Bolan was born Mark Feld in London on September 30, 1947. Thirty years later, the date would arrive without him. 🎂

Before becoming the glittering frontman of T. Rex, Bolan repeatedly reinvented himself: from a mid-1960s folk singer and a guitarist with John’s Children to one half of the acoustic duo Tyrannosaurus Rex. As the group evolved into T. Rex, he became one of the most recognizable stars of British glam rock. ✨🎸

Yet away from the stage, there was one everyday skill Bolan never acquired: he did not learn to drive.

After his death, former manager Tony Secunda said Bolan had refused because he feared dying young in a car crash. That account supports a terrible irony—but not the later mythology that Bolan had precisely predicted his death. 🚗

In the early hours of September 16, 1977, Bolan was travelling through southwest London in a Mini driven by his partner, American singer Gloria Jones. The car left the road and struck a tree on Barnes Common. Jones survived with serious injuries; Bolan, the passenger, was killed. 🌳

He was 29 years old, just two weeks short of his thirtieth birthday.

There is no need to add prophecy, fate or supernatural foresight to make the story more dramatic. The verified facts are haunting enough: a musician who avoided driving because he feared a fatal crash ultimately lost his life while someone else was behind the wheel. 🕯️

Bolan’s life was brief, but the music, image and electric presence he created still outshine the tragic irony of how it ended.
