At the very moment Whitesnake were creating the album that would define their career, David Coverdale was confronting a terrifying possibility: he might never sing with the same style or power again. 🎙️

Born on September 22, 1951, Coverdale had already travelled an extraordinary road. He emerged from northern England to front Deep Purple in 1973, recording three studio albums with the group before building a new musical identity around Whitesnake. By the mid-1980s, he was preparing the band’s boldest record yet. 🎂🐍

Work on the album later widely known as 1987 began with Coverdale’s voice in strong condition. But during the sessions at Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver, he developed a serious sinus infection. His singing deteriorated, and the condition ultimately required surgery. 🏥

The stakes could hardly have been higher. Coverdale has said he was given a fifty-fifty chance of being able to sing afterward in the powerful, established style that had carried him through Deep Purple and Whitesnake. For six weeks, he recalled, he was reduced to speaking in a whisper.

The thought of losing not simply a job, but his fundamental means of expression, frightened him. Coverdale later described the prospect of being unable to sing and perform as horrifying—a moment when abilities once taken for granted suddenly seemed as if they could disappear. 😨

He recovered, rebuilt his voice and completed the record. Released in 1987, the album delivered “Still of the Night,” “Is This Love” and a newly recorded “Here I Go Again,” transforming Whitesnake into an international phenomenon. 🎚️🔥

Behind that triumphant voice was a period of profound uncertainty. The album sounds fearless—but its singer had first been forced to discover how much courage it could take simply to sing again.
