BORN ON THIS DAY - A WATER-FILLED HELMET TURNED THE “NO SURPRISES” VIDEO INTO A TERRIFYING ENDURANCE TEST
BORN ON THIS DAY — A WATER-FILLED HELMET TURNED THE “NO SURPRISES” VIDEO INTO A TERRIFYING ENDURANCE TEST 🌊
Born on October 7, 1968, Thom Yorke would become known for music filled with unease, vulnerability and restless experimentation. But during the making of one of Radiohead’s calmest songs, that tension became frighteningly physical.
In November 1997, director Grant Gee filmed Yorke for the “No Surprises” video inside a custom-built Perspex helmet. The camera remained fixed on his face as the chamber slowly filled with water, eventually leaving him completely submerged. 🎥
The setup included pipes, fast drains and a tight rubber seal around Yorke’s neck that he could pull in an emergency. Even so, the planned sequence demanded a formidable breath hold. The filmmakers therefore manipulated the song’s playback and changed the camera speed during filming, allowing the finished footage to remain synchronized while reducing Yorke’s time underwater by about 20 seconds. ⏱️
On paper, the technique made the shot more manageable. Under studio lights, surrounded by a waiting crew and trapped inside the apparatus, it became another matter. Adrenaline made holding his breath much harder, and early attempts reportedly ended after only a few seconds. 😰
The shoot became a series of repeated takes as Yorke gradually worked toward completing the sequence. Near the end of the day, he finally managed a full take; the crew filmed one more, but Gee preferred the first successful version. 💧
Behind-the-scenes footage later included in Grant Gee’s documentary “Meeting People Is Easy” reveals the strain hidden beneath the video’s controlled surface. What appears on screen as a serene, hypnotic close-up was created through careful engineering, altered speeds and genuine physical distress. 🎬
That contrast is what makes the video unforgettable: a gentle song, an expressionless frame—and a very real struggle unfolding just beneath the surface. 🎈
