On September 18, 1967, The Beach Boys released Smiley Smile. Hidden among its hushed, eccentric tracks was “Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (W. Woodpecker Symphony)”—a strange new piece carrying musical material associated with Brian Wilson’s abandoned “Fire” experiment. 🎶

Earlier that year, Wilson had recorded “Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow,” commonly known as “Fire,” for the unfinished Smile project. He wanted the session’s atmosphere to match the music: a fire was lit in a studio bucket, while the musicians wore toy firemen’s helmets as they played. 🚒🪵

Then came the moment that frightened him. After the recording was played back, Wilson learned that a fire had broken out across the road. In the fearful state of mind he later described, he believed the music might somehow have caused it. He eventually acknowledged that it had not—but at the time, the coincidence became entangled with his growing paranoia. ⚠️

There was never evidence that the recording caused any real fire. What mattered was that Wilson believed it might have, turning “Fire” from an ambitious composition into something he feared.

When Smile was shelved, however, its music did not disappear completely. “Fall Breaks and Back to Winter” reworked material connected to “Fire,” surrounding wordless voices with sparse, unusual sounds including organ, harmonicas, wood blocks, wind chimes and bells. ❄️

The result is one of Smiley Smile’s most unsettling moments: playful on the surface, yet shadowed by the memory of a session that had terrified its creator.
