ON THIS DAY IN 2021 - TONY BENNETT RECORDED HIS FINAL ALBUM WHILE ALZHEIMER'S WAS STEALING HIS EVERYDAY WORDS
In 2021, Tony Bennett’s final studio album arrived after being recorded while Alzheimer’s disease was making ordinary words, objects and memories increasingly difficult for him. Yet when the music began, his singing voice was still there. 🎙️
Bennett had been diagnosed in 2016, before he and Lady Gaga entered New York’s Electric Lady Studios to make Love for Sale. Recorded across sessions from 2018 to 2020, the project reunited the pair for a collection devoted to the songs of Cole Porter. 🎼
Between performances, however, the studio could feel very different. Raw documentary footage showed Bennett speaking rarely, his words sometimes halting. At moments he appeared lost or bewildered, while Gaga kept her sentences short and simple as she communicated with him.
Then a musical cue would arrive. Bennett would begin to sing, and the uncertainty visible between takes gave way to the phrasing, control and expression that had defined his career. ✨
During one especially emotional moment, Gaga stood behind her microphone as Bennett delivered a solo passage from a love song. Her smile began to tremble, her eyes filled, and she finally covered her face and sobbed. It was a quiet reaction to the contrast unfolding in front of her: conversation had become difficult, but the song remained within reach. 💔
Released on October 1, Love for Sale mixed duets with solo performances and was officially presented as Bennett’s last studio recording. The album did not hide the reality surrounding its creation, but neither was it defined only by illness. It preserved the sound of two artists listening closely to each other—and of a legendary singer finding his way through music when everyday language could no longer guide him. ❤️
Some final albums close a career. This one captured a voice refusing to disappear before the last note. 🎶
