JOHN LENNON SAID YOKO AND PHIL SPECTOR WINCED AT THE SONG THAT BECAME “JEALOUS GUY”

While making Imagine, John Lennon returned to a melody he had carried for three years — and to lyrics that, by his own account, made Yoko Ono, Phil Spector and several other listeners wince. 😬

The song began in India in 1968. After hearing Maharishi Mahesh Yogi lecture about nature, Lennon wrote “Child of Nature.” The same talk also inspired Paul McCartney’s “Mother Nature’s Son.” 🧘

During the final week of May, the Beatles gathered at George Harrison’s home in Esher and made acoustic demos of 27 songs. “Child of Nature” was among them: Lennon singing about travel, mountains and belonging to the natural world. 🎸

The melody stayed with him.

Lennon later said he always liked it, even though he considered the original words silly. When he performed the song for Yoko, Spector and others, he remembered them wincing. He then decided to replace the lyrics — and said he did it with Yoko’s help. ✍️

Yoko recalled telling him that the melody was beautiful, but that he should search inside himself for something more sensitive.

By the Imagine sessions in May 1971, the nature song had become “Jealous Guy”: no spiritual travelogue, but an exposed admission of insecurity, possessiveness and hurt. Lennon later described himself as intensely jealous and insecure, saying the lyrics explained that side of him plainly. 🎹

At Lennon’s Ascot Sound Studios, the backing track reached take 29 on May 24. He added his lead vocal five days later, and the Flux Fiddlers’ strings followed in New York on July 4. 🎻

In 2018, the original Esher demo finally received an official release, allowing listeners to hear the same musical foundation before Lennon turned inward. 🕰️

Sometimes a melody waits years for its writer to tell the harder truth.
