Second Thoughts

The album was originally released in the UK in 1976 under the name "Mental Notes," but it was different from the band's debut album of the same name. The second UK release incorporated two songs from their actual debut album and included re-recorded versions of all the remaining songs.

The name "Second Thoughts" came about when the album was released in New Zealand--a reference to the reworked songs from their debut. It was produced by Phil Manzanera, an English musician known for his work as the lead guitarist for the rock band Roxy Music. This album marked a departure from their progressive rock roots and served as a step towards their uniquely theatrical and experimental style that they would become known for.

"Second Thoughts" features the hit singles "Late Last Night" and "Sweet Dreams," both of which received considerable airplay in New Zealand. This album played a crucial role in shaping Split Enz’s distinctive sound and image, showcasing their eclectic, sharp, and surreal style.

Interestingly, the album cover art, designed by the band's keyboardist Edward Pumanand, is different in the UK and New Zealand releases.
