Novum

"Novum" is the twelfth studio album by British rock band Procol Harum, released on 21 April 2017. This album marks the band's first release of new material in almost 14 years, following their previous album "The Well's on Fire" in 2003.

From the perspective of the band's extensive career, "Novum" is widely regarded as a significant entry. It was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of their debut single "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Unlike their traditional approach of making music where music precedes lyrics, this time the musical composition was developed around the words, thanks to the contribution of the band lyricist Pete Brown, known notably for his songwriting contribution to the rock band Cream.

The album consists of 11 tracks that delved into a variety of musical genres, maintaining Procol Harum's well-crafted, melodic progressive rock while incorporating new stylistic elements. Its sound is characterized by Gary Brooker's soulful, bluesy piano and powerful vocals, underpinned by the stalwart rhythm section of Matt Pegg on bass and Geoff Dunn on drums, organ work by Josh Phillips, and Geoff Whitehorn's expressive guitar work.
