Split (Lush album)

"Split" is the second studio album by British alternative rock band Lush. Released on 13 June 1994 by 4AD, the album displays an evolution in the band’s sound with a move away from the pop sensibility and shoegaze of their earlier work. It represents a more experimental and discordant direction while retaining elements of melodic structure, reflecting influence from Britpop which was at its height at the time.

The album was produced by Mike Hedges, with the Duke Quartet contributing string arrangements on some tracks. The production aimed for a more live sound, meaning many of the tracks were recorded in one take to capture the energy of the band's concert performances.

"Split" received mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics praised its diverse range of moods and styles, while others felt that it lacked cohesion due to these same elements.

The album spawned three singles: "Desire Lines", "Hypocrite", and "Undertow". However, none of the singles charted in the UK Top 40.

The lyrical themes of the album delve into personal and heartfelt topics, including relationships, childhood memories and the pressures of fame. The members of the band, particularly Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, share songwriting duties, each bringing their unique perspectives to the songs.

Despite its mixed initial reception, in the years following its release, "Split" has gained a reputation as a bold and innovative album in Lush's discography.
