Smile (Ride album)

"Smile" is a compilation album by British rock band Ride. The album primarily comprises of songs from the band's debut "Ride" and follow-up "Play" EPs that were released in 1990. Both of these EPs received critical acclaim, pushing the boundaries of the shoegaze genre, a sub-genre of indie rock that emerged in the UK in the late 80s.

The band members of Ride include Mark Gardener, Andy Bell, Laurence Colbert, and Steve Queralt. They are known for their mix of 1960s-influenced pop/rock, executed in an effects-laden post-punk mode, mostly courtesy of guitarist and occasional vocalist Bell. This signature sound shines through the 8 tracks included in the "Smile" album. This album was given its name due to the distinctive smiley faces on the front of the album.

Some standout songs from the album include "Chelsea Girl" and "Drive Blind." The latter is a sonic tour de force, starting slow and dreamy before exploding into a wash of sound in the final section. The music is a blend of dreamy melodies, intense, noisy rock, and complex song structures.

Please note that "Smile" was first released in the USA and Canada only but was subsequently re-released internationally. Despite it being a compilation album, "Smile" played a significant role in Ride's discography, helping to build their reputation and establish them as one of the pioneering bands of the shoegaze genre.
