ON THIS DAY IN 1991 — JOHN FRUSCIANTE WANTED TO QUIT BEFORE THE ALBUM’S TOUR EVEN BEGAN 🎸

When Red Hot Chili Peppers released Blood Sugar Sex Magik on September 24, 1991, the band appeared ready for a major new chapter. Behind the scenes, however, guitarist John Frusciante had already felt that he should walk away.

The album had been created during two intensely focused months inside a rented mansion in Laurel Canyon. Rather than working in a conventional studio, the band lived, wrote and recorded in the house, building what Frusciante remembered as an unusually connected creative environment. 🏠✨

Frusciante later said that, before he had even moved out, he felt strongly that he should quit the group. He feared that returning to the touring world would cost him the creative space he had developed while writing and recording the album.

But he did not leave. Frusciante said he lacked the courage to give up what was ahead, and the band moved forward as Blood Sugar Sex Magik became its critical and commercial breakthrough. Featuring songs including “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge” and “Breaking the Girl,” the record sent the Chili Peppers onto an extensive international tour. 💿🌍

The conflict Frusciante had sensed inside the recording house eventually reached its breaking point in Japan. On May 7, 1992, only hours before a scheduled concert, he announced that he could not continue and wanted to return home.

Management intervened, and Frusciante agreed to perform that night. Once the show was finished, he was placed on a flight home, bringing his first period with the band to an abrupt end. ✈️

The album opened a door to worldwide success, but one of the musicians at its creative heart had already been wondering whether he could step through it.
