ON THIS DAY IN 1991 — BOBBY GILLESPIE COLLAPSED AND ROBERT YOUNG FINISHED “SLIP INSIDE THIS HOUSE” 🎙️

When Primal Scream released Screamadelica on September 23, 1991, one of its most striking performances carried a secret: the voice leading “Slip Inside This House” was largely not Bobby Gillespie’s.

The song was already an unusual choice. A radical reworking of the 13th Floor Elevators’ psychedelic original, it featured lyrics that Gillespie had cut down and edited for Primal Scream’s version. He was supposed to sing it himself. 🌀

But when the recording day arrived, Gillespie was in poor shape with what he later called “acid house flu.” It was a very hot summer’s day, and he managed only a couple of vocal takes before more or less collapsing on the studio floor. 🌡️

That left the band with an immediate problem. They had only one day in the studio, the track still needed its lead vocal, and their intended singer could not continue.

So guitarist Robert Young stepped forward. 🎸

Young did not consider himself a singer, but somebody had to complete the session. He worked by replicating Gillespie’s delivery, adopting the hushed, whispering style the track required. The result was convincing enough that many listeners naturally assumed they were hearing Gillespie throughout.

Instead, most of the lead vocal on the finished album recording belongs to Young. Gillespie’s interrupted session had unexpectedly turned a guitarist into the voice of one of Screamadelica’s strangest and most hypnotic moments. 🎧

It is a perfect little piece of the album’s unpredictable spirit: when the planned performance collapsed, the music found another voice. ✨
