🎹 On September 22, 1997, Elton John released The Big Picture in the UK. Yet one of its tracks had already entered an extraordinary chapter of pop history—sharing a single with the newly recorded tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales.

“Something About the Way You Look Tonight” had been lined up as a single from the forthcoming album before Diana died on August 31. It began as a conventional album release, separate from the events that would soon surround it.

🕯️ After Elton performed a rewritten “Candle in the Wind” at Diana’s funeral on September 6, he recorded the memorial version with producer George Martin. On September 13, it was issued as a double-A-side with “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.”

The demand was unlike anything retailers had experienced. 🌍 Tower Records’ UK operation said its order was 30 times larger than any previous single order, while 3.4 million copies were being sent to stores in the United States ahead of the American release.

Then came The Big Picture. 💿 Arriving in the UK nine days after the double-A-side, the album placed “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” back in its original setting—as its opening track and first single.

The combined release spent five weeks at Number 1 in the UK. Within four weeks, it had become the country’s best-selling single of all time, a record the pairing still holds. 📀

Two songs created for entirely different moments were permanently joined on one release: one introducing Elton John’s next album, the other carrying the weight of public remembrance.
