ON THIS DAY IN 1999, Nine Inch Nails released The Fragile — and one of its most serene pieces emerged from a Big Sur retreat where Trent Reznor contemplated suicide. 🌊

Before the album took shape, Reznor withdrew to a house above the ocean in California. He was searching for lost inspiration while enduring what he described as the lowest point of his life. The isolation was meant to offer a change of scene, but he found it terrifying: alone on the side of a mountain, far from ordinary life. 🏚️

Its piano-led opening, upright bass and gradually expanding rhythms created a striking pocket of stillness within the sprawling double album.
