ON THIS DAY IN 1971 — “JULY MORNING” BEGAN ITS JOURNEY TOWARD BECOMING THE ANTHEM OF BULGARIA’S UNOFFICIAL SUNRISE CELEBRATION 🌅

When Uriah Heep released Look at Yourself, few could have imagined that its ten-minute epic “July Morning” would one day inspire an annual ritual hundreds of miles from the band’s British home. 🎸

Beginning in the 1980s, groups of Bulgarians gathered to welcome the first sunrise of July with the song as their soundtrack. The exact origin of the custom remains disputed, but the first large gathering is commonly dated to 1986, when people assembled on the seafront at Varna.

Under communist rule, the occasion became associated with personal freedom and peaceful cultural resistance. Participants stayed together through the night before greeting the dawn, turning a rock song into an expression of the free spirit. ✌️

The tradition survived the end of communism and spread far beyond Varna. Every year, people began meeting on beaches, cliffs, riverbanks, lakeshores and hilltops across Bulgaria. The country’s best-known gathering place became Kamen Bryag, where crowds watched the sun rise above the Black Sea. ☀️🌊

Former Uriah Heep singer John Lawton became closely connected with the celebration. Starting in 2004, he repeatedly performed “July Morning” at sunrise, first at Kamen Bryag and later at Tutrakan, where he gave his final sunrise performance in 2018. 🎤

After Lawton died in 2021, his family scattered his ashes at Kamen Bryag in March 2022. That July, a monument to him was unveiled at the place where he had performed for so many gathered fans.

A song created for an album had become something larger: a meeting point between rock music, memory and the first light of a new morning. 🌄
