ON THIS DAY IN 1976 — AC/DC RELEASED THE ALBUM THAT CARRIED “RIDE ON,” THE SONG BON SCOTT SANG AGAIN SIX DAYS BEFORE HIS DEATH ⚡

On September 20, 1976, AC/DC released Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in Australia. Among its hard-driving riffs and trademark swagger sat something strikingly different: “Ride On,” a slow, vulnerable blues carried by Bon Scott’s weathered voice.

Nearly four years later, the song resurfaced in an extraordinary setting. 🎙️

On February 13, 1980, Scott visited the French hard-rock band Trust at Scorpio Sound Studios in London, where they were working on their album Répression. Scott had also been helping singer Bernie Bonvoisin with English versions of the band’s material.

According to an account from Trust, guitarist Norbert Krief began playing “Ride On.” It was not a planned recording session. Scott spontaneously stepped up to the microphone alongside Bonvoisin and began singing. 🎸

The moment happened so unexpectedly that the engineer only started recording after the performance was underway, leaving the beginning uncaptured. What remained was an unguarded return to one of Scott’s most reflective AC/DC songs.

Two days later, accounts place Scott with Angus and Malcolm Young during instrumental demo work. Then, on February 19, 1980, Bon Scott died in London at the age of 33—six days after the Trust session. 🕯️

The impromptu “Ride On” performance remained unreleased until 2000. It is remembered as one of Scott’s final known vocal recordings, preserved not through a formal plan, but because someone had the presence of mind to press record.
