ON THIS DAY IN 1988 — TENDER PREY HONORED THE TEENAGE STAR OF PIXOTE AFTER HIS DEATH

When Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released Tender Prey on September 19, 1988, the album carried a dedication to a young Brazilian actor whose real life had ended with a disturbing echo of the world he portrayed on screen. 🎬

Fernando Ramos da Silva was the title character in Héctor Babenco’s Pixote, the acclaimed 1980 film about abandoned children caught in a brutal cycle of institutional abuse, street crime and violence. Ramos da Silva came from a poor neighborhood outside São Paulo and was chosen for the role when he was 11 years old.

His performance made him famous, but the promise of a lasting acting career did not follow. On August 25, 1987, Ramos da Silva was killed in police gunfire. He was only 19. 🕯️

For Cave, the news had a personal emotional force. He identified Pixote as his favorite film and later said he had been mortified to learn of its young star’s death.

Just over a year later, Tender Prey arrived. 💿 The Bad Seeds’ fifth studio album opened with “The Mercy Seat” and moved through songs filled with judgment, violence, dread and the possibility of redemption. Yet beyond the music, the dedication preserved the name of Fernando Ramos da Silva.

The album did not claim to explain his life or death. It simply asked listeners, however quietly, not to forget him. 🖤

That makes Tender Prey more than a landmark Nick Cave record: it is also a small act of remembrance, connecting music and cinema through the memory of a teenager whose most celebrated role now feels inseparable from his fate. 🎞️
