ON THIS DAY IN 1985 — “I STILL REMEMBER” WAS REWRITTEN IN THE VOICE OF AN ABUSED DOG

When Gary Numan released The Fury on September 16, 1985, its closing track was a song of personal anguish: lost love, lingering memories and pain that refused to fade. 🎹

But the following year, “I Still Remember” returned with an entirely different story.

For the 1986 single version, Numan replaced the album lyrics with words written from the viewpoint of a mistreated dog. The new narrator is confined, broken and unheard, pleading for help as time runs out. By the song’s end, the animal is dying. 🐕💔

Numan linked the rewrite to an edition of the television programme Animal Squad that featured a dog suffering from starvation. 📺 Rather than simply reissuing the original album track, he recorded a new vocal and transformed its private heartbreak into a stark animal-cruelty narrative.

Released by Numa Records on November 17, 1986, the single appeared in 7-inch and 12-inch formats, backed with the instrumental “Puppets.” It entered the UK chart and reached No. 74. 💿

The record also had a purpose beyond the charts. Its sleeve stated that it had been released with the RSPCA’s full support and appreciation. It carried a direct pledge from Numan: his royalty from every copy sold would be donated to the animal-welfare charity. 🐾

The contrast remains striking. A song that had once looked inward was rewritten to speak for an animal unable to explain its suffering. The title stayed the same, but what was being remembered—and who was remembering it—changed completely.

Sometimes the most unforgettable rewrite is the one that gives pain a different voice.
