ON THIS DAY IN 2003 - THE REALITY TOUR ENDED AFTER BOWIE NEEDED EMERGENCY HEART SURGERY

On this day in 2003, David Bowie released Reality—an album designed for the stage. Less than a year later, the world tour built around it would end with emergency heart surgery and become the final concert tour of his career. ⚡

Reality, Bowie’s 26th studio album, reunited him with longtime producer Tony Visconti. Its release coincided with plans for Bowie’s first world tour in almost a decade, and A Reality Tour opened in Copenhagen on October 7, 2003. 💿

The shows mixed new material—including “New Killer Star,” “She’ll Drive the Big Car” and the title track—with songs spanning Bowie’s catalogue. The itinerary grew beyond its original European run, carrying Bowie and his band through North America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia before returning to Europe for summer festivals. 🌍

Then, on June 25, 2004, Bowie performed at a festival in Scheeßel, Germany, after experiencing pain. He sought medical treatment, and doctors discovered an acutely blocked artery. An emergency angioplasty was required. 🚨

The remaining European dates were cancelled while Bowie recovered with his family. What had begun as a major international celebration of Reality had reached an abrupt and unforeseen finish. ❤️‍🩹

Bowie later made a small number of guest appearances, but he never undertook another concert tour. That made the Scheeßel festival performance the unplanned closing night of a touring career that had repeatedly transformed what a rock show could look and feel like. 🎤

Reality was created to live onstage. Its tour ultimately became something more poignant: the final full journey of an artist whose music always seemed ready for the next transformation.
