CAPTAIN BEEFHEART FELL OFFSTAGE — AND RY COODER QUIT A WEEK BEFORE MONTEREY

Safe as Milk had been recorded but was still unreleased when Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band headed to Mount Tamalpais for one crucial test: a festival performance one week before their scheduled appearance at Monterey Pop. 🎪

The band had rehearsed daily. Drummer John French remembered them sounding strong, even though Don Van Vliet rarely joined those rehearsals. Young guitarist Ry Cooder, who had just recorded the album with them, was helping hold the complicated material together. 🎸

Then came June 11, 1967.

According to French, Van Vliet decided on the bus ride to open with an unfamiliar jam. The musicians made it through, but during the next number their singer froze, turned around and walked off the back of the stage as though there were no drop behind him. 🎤⬇️

French later recalled Van Vliet describing it as an anxiety attack. Looking into the crowd, he said, he had seen a young woman’s face turn into a fish, with bubbles coming from her mouth. 🐟

The band completed the number. French then saw Cooder packing his guitar and saying he had better things to do.

Cooder quit.

The Magic Band had been scheduled for Monterey the following weekend, but it did not perform there. Bassist Jerry Handley later said the group had to reorganize and could not find another guitar partnership like Cooder and Alex St. Clair. 🧳

Safe as Milk arrived later in 1967 with Cooder’s playing preserved on the record — but the lineup that made it never received its Monterey moment. 💿

The album kept the magic. Monterey got the empty space.
