ON THIS DAY IN 1992 โ RICHIE SAMBORA HAD TO LEAP INTO A HOVERING HELICOPTER TO ESCAPE A MOUNTAINTOP ๐
On November 3, 1992, Bon Jovi released Keep the Faith. The date marks the albumโs arrival; the danger unfolded during filming for the video of its sweeping ballad โBed of Roses.โ โค๏ธ
For one scene, guitarist Richie Sambora was taken to a mountaintop to perform the songโs soaring guitar parts. The dramatic setting delivered exactly the kind of images the production needed: Sambora playing high above the landscape, surrounded by rugged peaks. ๐๏ธ๐ธ
Then the weather turned the shoot into something far more serious.
High winds prevented the helicopter sent to retrieve Sambora from landing. With conditions making it life-threateningly cold to remain on the mountain overnight, waiting until morning was not considered a safe option. ๐ฌ๏ธ๐ฅถ
Sambora and the stunt coordinator therefore had to get into the helicopter while it hovered without fully touching down. What had begun as a performance for a romantic music video ended with a real escape from the mountain.
Those mountaintop images made it into the finished โBed of Rosesโ video, which opens with Sambora playing among the peaks before moving to other scenes featuring the band. Viewers saw a powerful visual accompaniment to one of Keep the Faithโs most emotional songsโbut not the danger behind those opening shots.
โBed of Rosesโ would become the albumโs second single and a defining Bon Jovi power ballad. Yet behind its polished video lies a reminder that sometimes the most breathtaking rock imagery came breathtakingly close to becoming something else entirely. ๐
