ON THIS DAY IN 1976 - ROGER GLOVER THREATENED TO WALK AFTER FIVE DAYS PRODUCED NO RECORDINGS
ON THIS DAY IN 1976 โ ROGER GLOVER THREATENED TO WALK AFTER FIVE DAYS PRODUCED NO RECORDINGS ๐๏ธ
Five days into a two-week studio booking, Rory Gallagher and his band still had not put anything on tape.
Roger Glover had originally reserved the time at Musicland Studios in Munich for a solo project. When he heard that Gallagher wanted to make an album quickly, the Deep Purple bassist offered him the booking and agreed to produce the sessions.
Glover was already an admirer. He had previously crossed paths with Gallagher when Deep Purple toured with Taste, and he welcomed the opportunity to work with a guitarist he believed deserved greater recognition.
But once the band arrived, recording was not exactly the first priority. ๐บ
Glover remembered Guinness flowing, plenty of laughter and Gallagher stepping up to the microphone to perform a comic impersonation of a Southern preacher. The atmosphere was entertaining โ but the studio clock kept running. ๐๏ธโณ
After five days without a recording, Glover finally warned Gallagher that he would have to walk away from the project unless the sessions began making progress.
According to Glover, that was the turning point. Work finally started, and the sessions produced Calling Card, including songs such as โMoonchildโ and โCountry Mile.โ โก
Bassist Gerry McAvoy later acknowledged that there had been some friction between Gallagher and Glover. Gallagher was accustomed to producing himself and preferred rougher edges, while Glover brought a smoother approach shaped by his experience with Deep Purple. Even so, McAvoy believed the finished result was good.
Calling Card arrived in October 1976, but its opening days had come remarkably close to losing the outside producer before a single performance reached the tape.
A studio can be filled with laughter, talent and Guinness โ but until the tape starts rolling, it remains a room full of possibilities. ๐ธ
