ON THIS DAY IN 1991 — A BADMOTORFINGER DEEP CUT BECAME CHRIS CORNELL’S FINAL SONG ONSTAGE
When Soundgarden released Badmotorfinger on October 8, 1991, “Slaves & Bulldozers” arrived as one of the album’s heaviest tracks — a sprawling, punishing song placed between “Outshined” and “Jesus Christ Pose.” 🎸
For years, it remained a formidable part of the band’s live repertoire: a song built to stretch beyond its studio form, giving Soundgarden room to turn its weight and tension into something even more overwhelming onstage. 🔥
More than 25 years after the album’s release, the track took on a significance no one could have anticipated.
On May 17, 2017, Soundgarden performed at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. The set moved through material from across the band’s career, including “Spoonman,” “Black Hole Sun,” “Fell on Black Days” and “Jesus Christ Pose.” After returning for an encore and playing “Rusty Cage,” the band closed with “Slaves & Bulldozers.” 🎤
During the performance, Chris Cornell incorporated a refrain from “In My Time of Dying,” something Soundgarden had also done at other shows. In the moment, it was part of the band’s established approach to the song — not evidence of a farewell, prediction or hidden message. 🌑
Several hours after the concert, Cornell was found dead in his Detroit hotel room. The closing performance therefore became the final song he ever sang onstage. 🕯️
That knowledge makes the footage difficult to revisit without hearing the moment differently. But its power does not need mythology: a crushing Badmotorfinger deep cut became the last showcase for one of rock’s most unmistakable voices.
Sometimes a song’s meaning changes not because the music changed, but because everything after it did.
