ON THIS DAY IN 1987 — SINÉAD RECORDED THE ALBUM TWICE WHILE RESISTING PRESSURE TO END HER PREGNANCY 🎙️
Sinéad O’Connor was only 19, almost 20, when the making of her debut album became entangled with an intensely personal struggle.
After she told her record company she was pregnant, O’Connor later recalled being sent to a company doctor. According to her account, he told her that because so much money had already been spent recording the album, she owed it to the company not to have her baby. ⚠️
The pressure did not end with that meeting. O’Connor said she eventually went to a hospital for the procedure, but became distressed and refused to let it go ahead. She left still pregnant. 🏥
Meanwhile, the album itself was unraveling. O’Connor disliked what had been recorded with the original producer, and that first version was ultimately abandoned. The extraordinary result was that her debut had to be made again. 🔁
Working with producer Kevin Moloney, she began rebuilding the record around the raw, stripped-down sound she wanted. Moloney later remembered having only enough funding for roughly three weeks of sessions. He also recalled that the vocals heard on the released album were recorded during the later stages of her pregnancy. 🔥
About three weeks after those replacement sessions finished, O’Connor gave birth to her son Jake.
The finished album, The Lion and the Cobra, carried the force of an artist who had already been required to defend both her creative vision and her right to make a deeply personal decision. 🦁
Before the world knew the full power of Sinéad O’Connor, her first album had already become an act of refusal: refusal to surrender her child, her sound or herself.
