ON THIS DAY IN 1982 - AFTER FINISHING THE NIGHTFLY, DONALD FAGEN SAID HE CAME APART LIKE A CHEAP SUIT
ON THIS DAY IN 1982 โ AFTER FINISHING THE NIGHTFLY, DONALD FAGEN SAID HE CAME APART LIKE A CHEAP SUIT ๐
Released on October 1, 1982, The Nightfly was Donald Fagenโs first solo album: a meticulously polished, autobiographical journey back to the world of his childhood and adolescence. ๐๏ธ
Its songs revisited late-night radio, jazz, science fiction and the cautiously hopeful dreams of America in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After the darker characters and sharp cynicism of Steely Dan, the record revealed a warmer and more personal side of its creator. ๐ฟ
But after completing the album, Fagenโs life moved in a very different direction.
The panic attacks he had experienced as a child returned, now accompanied by morbid thoughts and intense paranoia. He later remembered struggling simply to get through each day, let alone write music, and summed up his condition with one brutally vivid phrase: โI came apart like a cheap suit.โ ๐ง
Fagen sought therapy and took antidepressants. During much of the 1980s, writing became extraordinarily difficult. He later described long periods of nervousness, depression and emotional numbness, explaining that music had consumed his life since his teens and that constant studio work had helped him avoid confronting almost everything outside it. โ๏ธ
The chronology is striking, but it should not be mistaken for causality: Fagen said the crisis followed The Nightfly, not that the album itself caused it.
His next solo album, Kamakiriad, would not arrive until 1993, eleven years later. The Nightfly still sounds like a record gazing confidently toward the dawn; for its creator, however, the years that immediately followed were spent trying to find the light again. ๐
