ON THIS DAY IN 1990 - A NIGHTMARE SOUNDTRACK SONG BECAME IRON MAIDEN'S ONLY UK NO. 1
ON THIS DAY IN 1990, IRON MAIDEN RELEASED THE ALBUM THAT TURNED A NIGHTMARE SOUNDTRACK SONG INTO THEIR ONLY UK NO. 1. ๐
โBring Your Daughter... to the Slaughterโ was never intended for an Iron Maiden album. Bruce Dickinson originally wrote and recorded it for the 1989 soundtrack to A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, working with guitarist Janick Gers โ who had not yet joined Maiden. ๐ธ
The soundtrack assignment became Dickinsonโs first solo recording, but the song soon caught the attention of Maiden founder and bassist Steve Harris. Harris liked it so much that he asked Dickinson to let the band record its own version. Dickinson agreed, and the track found a new home on No Prayer for the Dying, released on October 1, 1990. ๐ฟ
The Maiden version was then chosen as the albumโs second single and released on Christmas Eve. Six days later, it reached the top of the UK singles chart โ becoming the bandโs first and still only UK No. 1. ๐
Its chart success arrived despite unusually limited BBC exposure. BBC Radio 1 did not add the single to its playlist, while Top of the Pops broadcast a dramatically shortened edit of the video. Dickinson later said the program showed only one minute and ten seconds of a song lasting more than four minutes. ๐ป๐บ
What began as a separate soundtrack commission had travelled an extraordinary path: from horror-film assignment, to solo recording, to Maiden album track, and finally to the highest chart position of the bandโs career.
Sometimes the most unexpected chapter becomes the one that stands alone in the record books.
