Two years earlier, Prince had written and produced “Shhh” for Campbell’s second album, I’m Ready. Released in 1993 and credited to Paisley Park, the provocative slow jam placed the young singer inside material far more adult than his clean-cut image suggested. 🤫

The recording session became especially uncomfortable when Campbell’s mother heard the song’s explicitly sensual content. Campbell later recalled seeing the frustration on her face as she listened. She objected to the material, and Prince had to persuade her to let her teenage son finish recording it. 🚪

Campbell completed the performance, and “Shhh” became one of four Prince-written tracks included on I’m Ready. But the song’s journey did not end there.

Prince later returned to “Shhh” himself, recording a new version at Paisley Park. His interpretation stretched beyond seven minutes, turning the song into an extended showcase built around his vocals, guitar and the muscular sound of the New Power Generation. 🎸
