Arc of a Diver

"Arc of a Diver" is the second studio album by the British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Steve Winwood. Released in 1980, it marks a pivotal shift in Winwood's career, following his split from his previous band, Traffic. The album's innovative sound combines elements of rock, pop, and blues, pushed into new territory with the extensive use of synthesizers and Winwood's falsetto singing.

Winwood produced the album entirely by himself, playing all the instruments, a feat that was relatively uncommon during the era. He recorded it at his home studio in Gloucestershire, England.

The album includes the hit single "While You See a Chance," which reached the Top 10 in the United States and Number 45 in the United Kingdom, launching Winwood into a new level of commercial success. Although critical reception was somewhat mixed at the time of release, the album has since been looked upon favourably, with many considering it a high point in Winwood's solo career.

The album's name is derived from a line in the song "Dust," and its cover art, featuring a colourful, cubist design, was created by Tony Wright, who had previously worked with Traffic.

"Arc of a Diver" reached number 3 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in the United States and was certified platinum by the RIAA for over one million copies sold. The success of this album solidified Winwood's standing as a distinguished solo artist, paving the way for his future endeavors.
