SubHuman

"subHuman" is the sixth studio album by Recoil, released on July 9, 2007, in Europe and August 14, 2007, in the US. Alan Wilder, the creative force behind Recoil and former member of Depeche Mode, announced the album's upcoming release in April 2007 through various platforms including Myspace and his official website, Shunt.

The album was released in multiple formats including standard CD, gatefold vinyl, and a special CD/DVD edition featuring stereo, 5.1 surround, and exclusive "ambient" mixes. The DVD included all music videos released at the time. Working closely with Wilder on "subHuman" was Joe Richardson, a blues musician from New Orleans, who contributed vocals, guitar, and harmonica. Wilder's wife and assistant, Hepzibah Sessa, and Paul Kendall, known for his work on Recoil's previous album "Liquid" (2000) and mixes from "Unsound Methods" (1997), also collaborated on the project. Additionally, English singer Carla Trevaskis, with experience working alongside notable artists, contributed to the album.

One of the tracks, "99 to Life," was inspired by a real-life story related to the maximum jail sentence short of the death penalty, as explained by Richardson in an interview with Side-Line, an industrial music magazine.

"subHuman" received positive reception for its innovative soundscapes and diverse collaborations, marking another creative milestone in Alan Wilder's post-Depeche Mode career with Recoil.
