Take Me to the Trees

"Take Me to the Trees" features four-fifths of the lineup from Modern English's early '80s era with 4AD. Frontman Robbie Grey, who continued to lead various versions of the band into the 2000s, reunited with keyboardist Steve Walker, guitarist Gary McDowell, and bassist Michael Conroy, adding drummer Roy Martin. The album was recorded over two to three years in Conroy's studio with Martyn Young of Colourbox as co-producer and additional keyboardist.

Grey's vocal style has evolved, moving from sharp howls and deep crooning to more subdued but passionate performances. The album showcases tracks like the glam-influenced "You're Corrupt," the driving "Dark Cloud," and the pained ballad "Come Out of Your Hole," highlighting Grey's ability to convey both affection and disgust. McDowell's guitar work is notably prominent, cutting through the mix with greater presence. The overall sound of the album has a slightly somber, submerged quality, adding a unique allure to a collection of solid, nostalgia-free material.
