Atlas

"Atlas" is the fourth full-length album by American electronic musician Laurel Halo, released on September 22, 2023, through her own label, Awe. The album showcases her distinctive sound, blending electronic elements with live instrumentation. Notable contributions come from saxophonist Bendik Giske, violinist James Underwood, cellist Lucy Railton, and vocalist Coby Sey, enriching the album's textures and depth. Atlas continues to highlight Halo's innovative approach to music, exploring new sonic landscapes and collaborations.

Atlas began to take shape in 2020, with Laurel Halo refining her sound during a residency at the Ina-GRM Studios in Paris in 2021. She spent that year experimenting with simple piano sketches, integrating electronic flourishes and acoustic instrumentation, influenced by her studies in electroacoustic sound design and a renewed passion for piano.

The album blends ambient and jazz elements, reflecting Halo's diverse musical explorations. She announced the album on July 12, 2023, alongside the lead single "Belleville," marking her return after a five-year hiatus. The title track "Atlas," released on August 8, features dramatic string arrangements and evokes an abstract sense of dread, showcasing Halo's unique approach to sound. This album is also her first release under her own label, Awe, named after her NTS radio show.
