Artificial Intelligence was initially titled Black Rose, but changes to the title and tracks delayed its release by five weeks. John Cale recorded the album in three weeks at Strongroom Studios with Nico's backing band, the Faction, and a few additional musicians. Notably, backing vocals were provided by Gill O'Donovan and Susie O'List, who had previously toured with Eurythmics.
