After a series of successful releases with the band Orange Juice, Collins' solo career faced a setback when he suffered a major stroke in 2005. Home Again was recorded at Edwyn Collins' West Heath Studios during the winter of 2004. However, the completion of the album was significantly delayed due to a serious health crisis that Collins faced. In February 2005, Collins suffered two brain haemorrhages, which led to him being hospitalized for much of that year. This medical emergency interrupted the recording process and required an extensive recovery period.

After a challenging and lengthy rehabilitation, Collins returned to his studio to resume work on the album. By the winter of 2006, he was able to mix the album with the assistance of engineer Seb Lewsley. The completion of Home Again in early 2007 marked a significant milestone in Collins' recovery and his return to music.

The album reflects not only his musical evolution but also his personal resilience. The production and mixing sessions were a critical part of his comeback, demonstrating his determination to finish the project despite the severe setbacks he encountered.
