Tanglewood Numbers

"Tanglewood Numbers" is the fifth studio album by Silver Jews, released in 2005. The album features David Berman as the principal songwriter and a consistent member of the band, joined by fourteen other musicians. Notably, it marks the return of Pavement members Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich, both of whom had collaborated with Silver Jews in previous albums. Also contributing to the album are Cassie Berman, David's then-wife, and Will Oldham.

The album cover features a photograph by renowned Southern photographer William Eggleston, capturing the aesthetic essence of the band's music.

The four years between Bright Flight and Tanglewood Numbers were tumultuous for Berman, who faced significant personal challenges, including substance abuse issues, depression, and a suicide attempt. Despite these struggles, he found a path to recovery and became more engaged with his Jewish faith, which influenced the album's themes.

During the recording process, the album faced a near catastrophe when a fire nearly destroyed the historic Easley-McCain studio in Memphis, where the mastering was to take place. Fortunately, the album was completed, allowing Silver Jews to share their distinctive blend of introspective lyrics and eclectic instrumentation once again.
