Imposter

"Imposter" is the third collaborative studio album by English singer-songwriter Dave Gahan and the electronica duo Soulsavers. Released on November 12, 2021, by Columbia Records, the album also produced one single. This album marks Gahan's fifth studio album overall and Soulsavers' seventh.

Imposter consists of cover versions of various rock songs, recorded live in Malibu, California, in November 2019. Dave Gahan explained that the album is deeply personal, as he feels a connection to other artists' voices and the way they interpret lyrics. He finds comfort in listening to the songs on the album, and says that every artist featured is someone whose performance has moved him deeply.

Reception of Imposter was generally favorable. The album received an average score of 67 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on reviews from six critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews." It scored 6.6 out of 10 on AnyDecentMusic?, which aggregates reviews from over 50 sources. Critics highlighted different aspects of the album, such as its introspective and contemplative nature, with some pointing out how the album showcases Gahan's vulnerable side.

Ben Hogwood of musicOMH wrote that the album reminded listeners of the range of Gahan's distinctive voice while also offering a glimpse into his more vulnerable side. Hogwood also noted the album's reflection of Gahan’s age, as he approaches 60. Clash rated the album 9 out of 10, calling it a significant and important work in Gahan's career, akin to Johnny Cash’s American series in terms of its long-term impact on his legacy.
