Family Tree

"Family Tree" is a box set by Icelandic singer Björk, released in November 2002 alongside her Greatest Hits album. The collection includes a book of lyrics titled Words, five 3-inch compact discs of rare and previously unreleased material, and a standard-sized CD featuring her greatest hits, personally selected by Björk.

Roots CD 1 features songs from Björk's early bands, including Kukl, the Elgar Sisters, and the Sugarcubes, recorded prior to her 1993 album Debut. Roots CD 2 contains B-sides and alternate versions of tracks from her albums. Beats focuses on both new and older songs with a more pronounced electronica influence. Strings CDs 1 and 2 include live and studio recordings featuring Björk with the Brodsky Quartet from 1999 and 2000.

The box set's artwork was created by M/M Paris in collaboration with Icelandic artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, featuring a stylized tree with letters at the top. To promote the compilation, a music video for the song "Nature is Ancient" was released, directed by Lynn Fox. Although the song was originally a B-side from the Bachelorette single in 1997, it was later included in this set and also featured on the Greatest Hits - Volumen 1993–2003 compilation.

Björk's notes for the project indicate that other tracks, such as "Immature" and "My Spine," were initially considered for inclusion, alongside compositions recorded with British composer John Tavener. Overall, Family Tree serves as a comprehensive retrospective of Björk's early work and evolution as an artist, showcasing her eclectic influences and innovative sound.
