The Complete Album Story

"Empathy" is a 1962 album by jazz musicians Bill Evans and Shelly Manne, recorded and released by Verve Records. The album came about when Evans and Manne were sharing a bill at New York's Village Vanguard nightclub. Verve producer Creed Taylor proposed a studio collaboration between the two bandleaders, which Evans' label at the time, Riverside Records, allowed him to participate in. The trio was completed by Monty Budwig, Manne’s bass player at the time.

The album features a selection of classic jazz standards, along with two songs by Irving Berlin from the 1962 musical Mr. President. The album cover includes a sculpture by Sheldon Machlin.
