The Information

"The Information" is the tenth studio album by American musician Beck, released on October 3, 2006, by Interscope Records. The album was produced and mixed by Nigel Godrich, known for his work on Beck's earlier albums Mutations (1998) and Sea Change (2002). Recording spanned from 2003 to 2006, during which Beck also worked on Guero with the Dust Brothers.

Beck described the making of The Information as a "painful" experience, noting that the process evolved significantly over time. He mentioned that they essentially reconstructed the album multiple times, starting in 2003 and reassembling it annually. The creative direction was initially aimed at creating a hip-hop influenced record, which blends with Beck’s previous introspective work, merging these two musical worlds.

The album features a unique concept for its artwork, presented with a blank sleeve and booklet, accompanied by one of four different sheets of stickers. This allowed fans to create their own album cover, reflecting Beck's desire for interactivity and customization. However, this approach led to The Information being ineligible for the UK Albums Chart, as the customizable nature was viewed as a marketing gimmick.

In an interview, Beck explained that the title The Information represents the constant mental noise that occupies our thoughts, preventing us from facing silence. He initially considered the title "International Dreambag" but found it too hippyish. Ultimately, the title reflects the album's themes and the mental clutter of modern life.

The Information received positive reviews from critics and appeared on several year-end lists, solidifying Beck’s reputation as an innovative artist willing to explore new sounds and concepts.
