He noted that the album's bigger and rawer sound was an improvement over the prettification" of Built for Speed. However, he criticized Brian Setzer's songwriting, describing him as a preening panderer who mythologized his rockabilly roots with ignorant cynicism. In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine remarked that the album sounded very similar to Built for Speed but was equally strong due to the success of its hits, (She's) Sexy + 17 and I Won't Stand in Your Way.
