Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo features the lead single "Pictures of Matchstick Men," which originally had a B-side of "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Café." The single reached No. 7 in the UK and No. 12 in the US, marking the band's only major hit in that market, while also hitting No. 8 in Canada. A second single, "Black Veils of Melancholy," flopped despite its similarity to the hit. The third single, "Ice in the Sun," also performed well, reaching No. 8 in the UK.

Released on September 27, 1968, the album itself did not chart in the UK. The band initially planned to release "Technicolour Dreams" as a fourth single but instead opted for "Make Me Stay a Bit Longer," which came out early the following year and was significant as it marked the end of the band's use of "the" in their name. This period laid the foundation for their later success and evolving style.
