Too Dark Park

"Too Dark Park" is the sixth studio album by the industrial music group Skinny Puppy, released on October 30, 1990. The album cover marks the debut of the band's "SP" logo and features artwork by Vancouver artist Jim Cummins, inspired by cosmic horror stories like the Cthulhu Mythos. The lyrics delve into themes of societal collapse, environmental destruction, drug addiction, and psychological struggles.

Recorded spontaneously at Mushroom Studios and mixed at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, the album shifts from the guitar-heavy sound of their previous work, Rabies, to a more chaotic, electronic style. Notable tracks include "Tormentor" and "Spasmolytic," both released as singles, with the latter featuring a music video. Collaborators on the album include producer Greg Reely and longtime producer Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, who contributed guitar on two tracks.

Critically, Too Dark Park has been well-received, praised for its haunting electronic riffs and sampling, though its disturbing nature may not appeal to all listeners. The band supported the album with the Too Dark Park tour across the U.S. and Canada, although no official live album was released from this tour.

Following the production of Rabies, the band members expressed dissatisfaction with the direction it took. Keyboardist Dwayne Goettel initially favored the album but later felt it deviated from the band’s vision. Internal tensions emerged regarding production and artistic direction, particularly concerning Al Jourgensen's involvement. After exploring various side projects, the members reconvened to focus on a new sound for Too Dark Park, aiming to return to their roots while integrating fresh ideas.

The title reflects the darker themes explored in the album, addressing environmental and personal issues, including Ogre's struggles with addiction. The music features samples from horror films and documentaries, characteristic of the band's style.

Too Dark Park was released with unique packaging and promotional efforts, including distributing cardboard masks based on the cover art. The singles "Tormentor" and "Spasmolytic" helped promote the album, further establishing Skinny Puppy's legacy in the industrial music scene.
