Singularity

"Singularity" is the 31st studio album by Peter Hammill, released in December 2006 on his own Fie! Records label. This album marked his return to recording after suffering a heart attack in 2003, and some of the songs on the album, such as "Our Eyes Give It Shape" and "Event Horizon," directly reflect his brush with death. Other tracks, like "Meanwhile My Mother" and "Friday Afternoon," explore themes of mortality in different contexts—specifically his mother's decline and the unexpected death of his piano tuner, respectively.

What makes Singularity stand out in Hammill's discography is that it is a completely solo effort. Unlike many of his recent albums, where he worked with other musicians, this album was written, played, and produced entirely by Hammill himself. This approach has led some critics to regard it as one of his strongest works since the 1980s.

The album's cover, designed by Paul Ridout, a frequent collaborator of Hammill's, features a photo by Dinu. The cover design plays with the concept of "Singularity," depicting Peter's face on the back cover in a mirror-image, creating a striking and reflective visual parallel to the album's introspective themes.
