Rave Tapes

"Rave Tapes" is the eighth studio album by Scottish post-rock band, Mogwai. Released on 20 January 2014 under the Rock Action Records label in the UK, and Sub Pop in the US, the album marked a departure from the heavy guitar rock of their previous album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.

Instead, "Rave Tapes" ushered in the extensive use of vintage synthesizers, further developing the electronic soundscapes they'd been exploring since their beginning. This shift is prevalent in the prominent use of vintage synths and drum machines on tracks like "Remurdered".

The album was recorded at the band's Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, over the course of 2013 by the band and Paul Savage, who also worked on their 2011 album. It was promoted with the release of the single "Remurdered" in October 2013, and the album artwork was designed by Dave Thomas.

"Rave Tapes" was met with positive reviews, praised for its restraint and subtlety, focusing less on the typical quiet-loud dynamic prevalent in their previous albums. It entered the UK Albums Chart at number 10 and peaked at 2 on the Scottish Albums Chart.

Despite the title "Rave Tapes", there's not much 'rave' to be found here; instead, it seems more to reflect the band's sense of humor, something that's often overlooked. The name is classic Mogwai, cryptic with a touch of self-deprecation - no rave, but lots of tapes, in the form of meditative loops and oscillating synths. The music itself is a collection of textured instrumentals, filled with both fury and serenity, creating an engaging atmosphere that rewards repeat listens. It's Mogwai refining their sound, a significant addition to their discography.
