Rattlesnakes

"Rattlesnakes" is the debut studio album by British rock and pop band Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, released on 12 October 1984 by Polydor Records. The album achieved commercial success, reaching number 13 on the UK Albums Chart and featuring notable singles like "Perfect Skin," "Forest Fire," and "Rattlesnakes."

Lloyd Cole, the band's frontman, was heavily influenced by artists like Bob Dylan and Booker T. & the M.G.'s. The album's title references Joan Didion's novel Play It as It Lays, reflecting Cole's background in English and philosophy. Most songs were written in the basement of Glasgow Golf Club, where Cole's family lived.

Cole described the lyrics as exploring the complexities of love, often portraying characters in romanticized, sometimes naive scenarios. He acknowledged the youthful exuberance and vulnerability present in his writing, remarking on the relatable yet idealized nature of his characters.

The album was recorded during the summer of 1984 at The Garden studios in Shoreditch, London, with Paul Hardiman as producer. The recording process was described as easygoing and collaborative, allowing the band to capture the essence of their music with a relaxed atmosphere.

"Perfect Skin" was inspired by Dylan and reflects the blend of personal experience and vivid imagery. "Forest Fire" is known for its catchy melody and showcases the band’s knack for anthemic songwriting. The title track, "Rattlesnakes," encapsulates the album's themes of longing and introspection.
