Bark (Jefferson Airplane album)

"Bark" is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in 1971 on Grunt Records (FTR-1001). It marked a significant period of transition for the band, being their first album without founder Marty Balin, who had departed during the recording sessions. It was also the first album to feature violinist Papa John Creach and drummer Joey Covington, who had replaced Spencer Dryden.

The album was Jefferson Airplane's first new release in two years, following 1969's "Volunteers". It also served as the debut release on Grunt Records, the band's autonomous label launched in partnership with RCA. This move allowed the band greater creative control over their music and releases.

"Bark" featured lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen prominently, with four songwriting credits, reflecting his increasing role as a composer and vocalist within the band. Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady had already been active with their blues rock side project, Hot Tuna, at the time of the album's recording.

Despite the lineup changes, "Bark" performed well commercially, reaching number 11 on the Billboard albums chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA for selling over 500,000 copies. The album's single, "Pretty as You Feel", led by Joey Covington, became Jefferson Airplane's final top 100 hit in the United States, peaking at number 60 on the Billboard chart and number 35 in Cashbox.
