The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is the sixth studio album by the English progressive rock band Genesis, released on November 22, 1974, by Charisma Records. It is the last album to feature original lead vocalist Peter Gabriel and is a double album. The album peaked at No. 10 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 41 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

The album is a concept album, with a story devised by Gabriel about a Puerto Rican youth named Rael from New York City who embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Genesis began working on the album's material at Headley Grange in the summer of 1974, with the band spending three months at the location. Tensions within the band began to rise during the process, as Gabriel insisted on writing all the lyrics for the album but temporarily left to work on a film project with filmmaker William Friedkin and also needed time to be with his family. During his absence, the rest of the band developed most of the songs through jam sessions, and they were recorded at Glaspant Manor in Wales using a mobile studio.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway follows a similar format to Genesis's debut album From Genesis to Revelation, being a concept album with Christian themes. It features a mix of concise pop songs centered around Gabriel's vocals and instrumental interludes, though many of the instrumental pieces were not listed in the track listing. The music and lyrics also contain references to Genesis's early works and influences. Upon its initial release, the album received mixed critical reactions and became the first Genesis album that failed to outsell its predecessors, but it gained considerable acclaim in the years following its release and developed a cult following.

The album spawned the singles "Counting Out Time" and "The Carpet Crawlers" in the UK in 1974 and 1975, respectively, but both failed to chart. In the US, a single for "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" was released. Genesis promoted the album with a 1974–1975 tour, during which they performed the entire album in concert. The album achieved Gold certification in both the UK and the US. It was later remastered in 1994 and again in 2007 as part of the Genesis 1970–1975 box set, which included a 5.1 surround sound mix and bonus material.
