The Cross of Changes

"The Cross of Changes" is the second studio album by the German musical project Enigma, headed by musician and producer Michael Cretu. Released in December 1993, the album represents a continuation of the sound established in the project's debut album, "MCMXC a.D."

The album explores the theme of changes and evolution, hence the title, using symbolisms like the cross which is emblematic of critical junctions or choices in life. Cretu applied solfeggio motifs and his signature combination of atmospheric synth pads, ethnic-inspired rhythms, spiritual and philosophical lyrics, interspersed with various vocal samples in a style known as Neue Deutsche Welle, a genre within the larger Europop.

"The Cross of Changes" managed to replicate the success of its predecessor, becoming a phenomenon on a global scale. It managed to secure Enigma's fanbase, selling millions of copies worldwide and spawning four singles, including the international hit "Return to Innocence."

Accounting for its artistic achievements, the album struck a balance between conventional musical pragmatics, and the breaking of new frontiers in ambient music; elements which set the stage for the later albums in Enigma's catalog. It's also worth noting that the very distinct sound that Michael Cretu created with this album significantly influenced the new age and electronic genres in the years to follow.

Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, with some believing that it failed to live up to the novelty and originality of its predecessor, it did win over a large audience and still holds a special place in the annals of electronic and new age music history.
