"Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" is the sixth studio album by British singer-songwriter Elton John. It was released on 26 January 1973 by DJM Records.

Entering the charts at the pinnacle, the album was John's first to reach No. 1 both in the UK and the US. It was acclaimed by critics for its melodies and introspective lyrics performance and has been certified gold and platinum multiple times around the world.

Two of the most significant singles from the album were "Daniel" and "Crocodile Rock." "Daniel" became one of John's biggest hits, reaching No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. On the other hand, "Crocodile Rock" was Elton John's first of many No. 1 singles in the US, spending three weeks at the top spot.

The album's title comes from something Elton said to a French journalist who had mistaken him for fellow rock pianist Leon Russell. He said, "Don't shoot me; I'm only the piano player," hence giving the album its title.
