Trout Mask Replica

"Trout Mask Replica" is the third studio album by American rock band Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released as a double album on June 16, 1969. Produced by Frank Zappa, the album combines elements of R&B, garage rock, and blues with free jazz, avant-garde approaches, and satirical, surreal lyrics.

The album was constructed through a painstaking process for the band members, who lived together in poverty as they followed Don Van Vliet's (aka Captain Beefheart) vision. Over an eight-month period, Vliet and his band transformed from an R&B group into a band capable of the complex time signatures and polyrhythms found throughout the record.

The album is often cited as central to the development of the punk and new wave movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is also recognized as a major work of experimental rock music and a touchstone of avant-garde art.
